Republican Network for Unity (RNU) Colour Party in the Square, Dundalk

Led by a Piper and Colour Party, RNU's main Easter Commemoration Parade accompanied by several flute bands and hundreds of supporters made its way to Dowdalshill Cemetery, stopping en route to pay homage at a Memorial Plaque dedicated to IRA Volunteer, Thomas Holland who was killed in action in the town in April 1920. Following the short tribute  marchers paraded onto the final resting place of IRA Volunteers; Thomas McKeown, John McNulty, Thomas Murray, James Melia, Thomas Lennon and Joseph Ferguson. All of who were held as Political Prisoners during the Irish Civil War. Who were taken from their prison cells and brutally executed by Free State Troops, as a deliberate policy of retaliation against Republican Operations in the area.

The Commemoration was chaired by Dundalk RNU Activist, Aiden Larkin who sent solidarity greetings to all other similar gatherings over Easter, before calling for the laying of wreaths, the traditional minutes silence and lowering of the flags before calling on a range of speakers.

The Proclamation of the Irish Republic was read by Dublin community activist and RNU Organiser, Tony Boland while the traditional Easter statement from the POWs was read out by Ard Comhairle member Ciarán Cunningham, The National PRO also took the opportunity to welcome local Republican Michael Campbell home from Lithuania.

The following statement was delivered by RNU Activist, Anne Duggan at Dundalk's Republican Plot which addressed Republican Unity, the combined struggle for Irish National Sovereignty, Socialism and the failure of Constitutional Nationalism.;

"A chairde agus comradai.
Tá Failte raoimh go leir, anseo ag an chomóradh Dun dealgan don Eiri amach na casca.
You are all very welcome at this, Dundalk’s 98th anniversary commemoration of the Easter Rising, at which we also remember our patriot dead from all periods of the Republican struggle for Irish Freedom.
This is the fourth year in which the movement in its current form, have gathered here at Dundalk Republican plot. The final resting place of IRA Volunteers; Thomas McKeown, John McNulty, Thomas Murray, James Melia, Thomas Lennon and Joseph Ferguson.
Previous speakers have talked at length on how these men paid the supreme sacrifice for their principles and refusal to abandon the Republican aspirations which had led them to war and eventual imprisonment. How in January 1922, they were taken in an act of barbaric retribution from their prison cells and executed, by the forces of the new Free State, the same forces who with fixed bayonets and rifle fire attacked mourners at this very grave side almost three years later; when eventually they saw fit to hand the bodies over for a decent Christian burial.
Dundalk Republican Plot on Easter Sunday
We assembled will never forget the ultimate sacrifice which was paid by our comrades who lie within in this plot, nor the sacrifice made by the thousands of other fallen patriots who have given their all, since the Republican struggle commenced in this country in 1798.
Today is our day for remembering all such brave men and women and we do so with a great pride and a continued determination that their deaths will not be in vain.
Republican Network for Unity have chosen to make Dundalk their annual national focus for commemorating our patriot dead, however we recognise that other similar commemorations are taking place across Ireland and further afield, today and over the course of the weekend. To all genuine Republicans gathered at similar events we extend comradely greetings and best wishes for the year ahead.
As always we take this opportunity to send our very best wishes and salutations to the incarcerated Republican prisoners, in Maghaberry, Portlaoise, Hydebank, Limerick and elsewhere recognising that many of them are prevented from paying tribute to Irelands fallen and indeed will face harsh punishment for trying to do so.
We pay particular tribute to our dear friend, RNU Ard Comhairle member, former H Block and current Maghaberry POW Tony Taylor, who stood here with us three years ago. We wish him the best and look forward to his return to Dundalk in the future.
In the past year we also lost our friend and comrade Oglach Seamus McKenna, at whose funeral we stood firm against the Free State forces who (just like their predecessors in this graveyard in 1924) tried but failed to prevent Republicans burying him with respect and dignity.
In the past year, Ireland also lost a stalwart of principled Republicanism, one time IRA leader Rurai O’Bradaigh.
His passing is felt by all Republicans and as with Seamus McKenna, we send our sympathy to his family, friends and comrades.
On a more positive note, since we last gathered here we have seen the return to Ireland of Michael Campbell from Lithuania, after years of living in unjustifiable imprisonment and squalor. We commend his bravery and celebrate his rightful return to Ireland.
We also (in this the centenary year of the Cumann na mBan movement) pay particular tribute to the unique and special role which women have played in the national struggle down through the generations, as active Volunteers in the field, within the prisons, as street activists, as mothers wives, partners and daughters; the women of Ireland who in their tens of thousands made up the back bone of the movement and without whom there would have been no Freedom struggle.
In the year since we last gathered here, RNU have stood by their promise to continue to build upon firm ground, the ideological basis upon which we as a collective of Republican activists committed ourselves to not giving up the Revolutionary position but instead revisiting and strengthening it. We believe and trust, that this position is in keeping with the aspirations of our patriot dead and vow to carry on our work in their name.
We long ago, recognised the blind alley, up which Irish Republicanism was being led by those who assured us that Britain could be confronted through a process of accommodation.
Those who espoused the abandonment of the Sovereignty principle, went on to espouse a process of perpetual accommodation with England, they continued to assure us throughout that Irish Republicanism could be best served by its own gradual destruction and destroy it they tried.
Not a fortnight ago we were treated to the nauseating spectacle of Irish citizens succumbing to the lure of British state banqueting, a long accepted Imperial method of killing off whatever self-respect was left within former opponents of England’s position.
Not sufficiently bedazzled by the fruits of coalition with Fine Gael; and in these times of abject poverty and renewed emigration at home; former Workers Party & Republican Clubs member Eamon Gilmore allowed himself to be paraded through the streets of London in a horse drawn carriage, flanked by the Royal Cavalry and accompanied by none other than Prince Charles, commander in chief of the Parachute regiment.
President of the pretend Republic, Michael D Higgins (a highly educated man) allowed himself to be used as a quaint ornament, testament to relinquished Irish aspirations of Independence, greeting the British head of state as if in normal times, yet fully aware that her government and forces still illegally stand in the way of his and our birth right, a free living nation with guaranteed sovereignty governed by the Republican principles of equality and social justice.
Most galling of all, the corrupt commander, Martin McGuinness, for whom so many gave up so much, appeared to the world dressed in the attire of the oppressor to dine with and toast the system which patriots went to their graves to resist, many spurred on by McGuinness’ own words, assurances and commands.
What must the families of our patriot dead feel when they view this spectacle? Indeed what must the families of all who died feel? Regardless of their role? Their apprehension and annoyance is fully justified, it is also shared by us.
However let us not spend any more time considering the antics of those who dined with the enemies of our freedom, let us celebrate the fact that we and others have kept the faith and like our fathers and theirs before them, have not only regrouped and gathered here, but have gathered with increasing confidence and vigour, willing and capable of reclaiming and rebuilding Revolutionary Republicanism, promising to practice its principles and realising its full potential.
We are living in challenging times, in which all who claim to uphold the values of principled Republicanism are called upon and are duty bound to bring fresh vigour and dynamics to the struggle, we in RNU have played our part in this process, not least through the promotion of our world-view documents and position papers ‘Standing outside the Pace Process’ and its sister document ‘Revolutionary Republicanism’.
No longer can we be accused of having no alternative to the failed Stormont process, as it bounces from crisis to crisis, leaving the Republican position more damaged with every blow.
We have an alternative; simply put we propose taking back Ireland; every inch of it; its national territory, its natural resources, means of production and decision making bodies, not for the benefits of a corrupt minority – as is the norm under the current system – but for the welfare and common good of all Irish citizens.
Furthermore, through our documents we have proposed a step by step process by which this vision can become so much more than a pipe dream, and can be made a reality; allowing our people to finally escape from the centuries old shackles of foreign occupation, shameful self-abandonment, emigration, poverty and neglect.
We encourage all those assembled to take the time to explore and learn from our twin documents which will  empower them with the arguments and logic needed to take the message of principled Republicanism to where its needs to be, amongst the ranks of the Irish Working Class.
There have been and continue to be, calls for the unity of all parties and organisations who claim the principled Republican position.
Allow us to give our perspectives on such calls. There is undoubted merit in these appeals for unity, but be under no doubt; unity is only unity when adhering to the principles of mutual respect, equality of expression and acceptance of both the opinions and duties of all parties involved. Any initiative which attempts to bypass the need for mutual respect or autonomy, or replaces such values with coercion and subterfuge cannot be considered unity at all.
We have embraced again the founding Republican ideals of Liberty, Equality & Fraternity; and by consequence the unashamed ideals of Irish National Liberation & Socialism. Under our watch, Socialist principles will not be abused as a smokescreen with which some would abandon the urgent need to free our country, nor will it be the preserve of a pompous minority of intellectuals. It will be the straight forward principled position for those who demand a fair deal for the ordinary man and woman of this country, who currently and shamefully are forced to work for the privilege life styles of the gombeen men of Ireland or the foreign bankers backed by the plundering and heartless forces of Troika and the IMF.
We say clearly that the fight for equality and the fight for our countries freedom are one and the same, you cannot have one without the other. This position was enshrined within the spirit of the 1916 proclamation, it was the message of Connolly and Pearce, the subsequent spirit of the programme of the 1st Dail which so many within the IRA (including those buried here) gave their lives up attempting to defend.
We will not let these men, or the children of Ireland down by perusing any less for our country. Let us once again leave this place imbued with a renewed determination to take back Ireland, in the name of God, our dead generations and those who we came to honour today".

The RNU Candidate commented; ‘The way to strengthen Working-Class, Socialist and Republican Unity is for the electorate in Oldpark to cast their second preference vote in favour of Ardoyne Republican, Dee Fennell in the Polling Booths. I also ask voters in the Castle area to give Socialist, Fra Hughes their first preference in the ballot’.

A March and Commemoration in honour of fallen Fianna, Davy McAuley, Josie McComiskey, Josh Campbell and Bernard Fox was held on Easter Saturday, 2014 in Ardoyne. The four Fianna Activists died in different incidents on Active-Service in 1972. The successful Commemoration was organised by RNU Beal Feirste and was the fourth annual dedication to the four local teenagers who paid the ultimate sacrifice in defence of their community against British and Unionist terrorism.

The march left from outside the Glenpark Social Club with a large Colour-Party down Ardoyne Avenue followed by relatives, the Gangard and Brendan Hughes (Scotland), Glasgow Socialist and Henry-Joy McCracken Republican Flute Bands. As well as, around one thousand supporters. Before stopping at the Ardoyne, Bone and Ligoniel Memorial Garden on the Berwick Road. Where flags were lowered, a minutes silence  respectfully observed and a wreath laid by a former Political Prisoner.

Oldpark RNU Candidate, Sammy Cusick slams NI Water Over Erroneous Claims

Oldpark Republican Network for Unity (RNU) Candidate, Sammy Cusick has slammed the Six County Water Board (NIW) Over erroneous claims.

Earlier this month, work began in Highbury Gardens and Ladbrook Drive area of Ardoyne. With NI Water claiming that new pipes would be laid in the two streets. The State-owned Company failed to inform local residents that 'Boundary Boxes' would also be installed outside their homes. Coupled with manifold connections these boxes are necessary for the installation of water meters.

The RNU Candidate said; 'Water Meters equals Water Charges and is a violation of the most basic of human rights. Stormont ONLY agreed to delay the implementation of Water Charges until 2016. This measure was not blocked, just postponed. The Working-Class have been misled enough by Career Politicians who care little about Working-Class families already struggling to pay their rent, food, electricity and heat'.
Sammy Cusick concluded; 'This crucial issue cannot be ignored residents are being misled and misinformed by Stormont and NI Water. Like RNU in Dublin recently, Our Belfast comrades will rally against this unjust scheme. Unity is needed to build a Community-based Campaign to defeat the installation of Water Meters'.

RNU accuse DUP of Concealing Housing Inequality in North Belfast

Republican Network for Unity (RNU) Candidate, Sammy Cusick was speaking after information published in ‘The Detail’ demonstrate the DUP has little interest in tackling the housing crisis in North Belfast.

North Belfast M.P., Nigel Dodds
Sammy Cusick said; ‘The Detail’ exposé names Nigel Dodds MP and Stormont’s Minister, Nelson McCausland bullied Housing Executive Officials into concealing the fact that more Nationalists than Unionists are on the waiting list for homes in the area.Theinvestigation prove that Unionist Gerrymandering is alive and well in the 21stCentury and the corrupt and sectarian nature of Stormont will allow it to continue’.

Stormont Housing Minister, Nelson McCausland M.L.A.

The Oldpark Candidate concluded; ‘Obviously sectarianism permeates every aspect of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). It seems they are only concerned with refusing Nationalists' homes and Unionist voting figures’.

RNU Challenge NI Water and Stormont Politicians to Publish Plans for Ardoyne Works Contract

Republican Network for Unity (RNU) Oldpark Candidate, Sammy Cusick has challenged the Six County Water Board (NIW) and Stormont Politicians to publish plans for Ardoyne works contract.

The North Belfast election Candidate commented; "On Friday 16th May, NIW asserted 'it was working on a scheme to improve the supply of water' in the Ardoyne area'. Sinn Fein's Gerry Kelly claimed his Party had  'secured political agreement to block water charges'. Last October, NIW issued tenders for £30m Metering Contract. Partitionist Parties at Stormont ONLY postponed and did not block the unfair charges until 2016 misinforming Ardoyne residents. The Six County Water Board and Career Politicians have failed the most vulnerable citizens. Consequently, I challenge NIW and Stormont Politicians to publish plans for recent work undertaken in the Ardoyne area".

Finally Sammy Cusick said; 'In support of Working-Class neighbourhoods like Ardoyne, RNU will resist the implementation of draconian water charges. As well as, the installation of Boundary Boxes and Water Meters. Penalising communities already suffering from high deprivation, unemployment and benefit cuts is morally wrong!'.

Belfast Council Election 2014

Last night (Saturday 24th May) ended the Oldpark Constituency's Council election for 2014. The Campaign, Count and Outcome was long and tiring for everyone involved. As for North Belfast RNU, it was our first foray into electoral politics and a learning curve in more ways than one.

In December last year, the Republican Network for Unity registered as a Political Party in the Six Counties. After much discussion amongst Activists, our Belfast Cumann selected Sammy Cusick to stand in the forthcoming Council election in the Oldpark Ward as our Candidate. Likewise, we also selected Tommy Doherty to stand in Blackmountain, in the west of the city. We released a number of statements to the Media about the Candidature of our two Activists.

Belfast RNU Candidates: Tommy Doherty & Sammy Cusick
Soon after the double announcement, RNU encountered our first hurdle. Belfast City Council would be one of eleven new Super-Councils in the North. Old Constituencies would change beyond past recognition due to Boundary changes. The changes would indeed make it tougher for new Parties like our Network to secure a seat in the Chamber. Not only that, RNU had an uphill task regarding the amount of lies printed regularly in Gutter Newspapers such as, The Sunday World, Andersonstown News and the North Belfast News since our formation in 2007. As well as, countless smears spread by political opponents about our members.

The second problem we faced was that fellow Socialist-Republicans in Eirigi were to field senior Party Member and former Political Prisoner, Padraic MacCoitir in Blackmountain the same Constituency as Tommy. Days later, GARC Spokesman  and Ardoyne Republican, Dee Fennell made a similar announcement that he was to be an Independent Candidate in Oldpark. In other words, RNU had a mountain to climb.

To facilitate the election of a Socialist-Republican in the Blackmountain Ward, our Network seriously reflected upon Tommy Doherty standing there. We made the decision in January to remove him from that Constituency and place Tommy in the Court area. RNU released a statement to that effect as we believed that Padraic MacCoitir was best placed to secure a seat. A tough decision but a radical one in our view. For the record, at no time was any electoral pact asked for, offered or even spoken about between RNU and Eirigi.
Aerial View of Ardoyne
The Republican Network for Unity did approach fellow Republican Dee Fennell to discuss an agreed Candidate for the Oldpark Ward. Sadly, nothing was agreed due to a number of reasons, not least the time frame and desire by both RNU and Dee to serve our community for the betterment of all. At the end of April, RNU issued a statement through our North Belfast Representative, Sammy Cusick calling on our families, friends and supporters to vote for Dee Fennell as their second choice and vote Socialist, Fra Hughes in Castle. A progressive step by our Party in an attempt to build Working-Class, Socialist and Republican unity.

Now the Council elections are finished, I believe in the time ahead that undiluted Republicans and Socialists must build on what has been achieved and not allow the Provisionals to misrepresent us any longer! We have legitimate concerns, a serious analysis and of course our policies. We should focus on what we agree upon and not what divides us from achieving our goals. Better represent our communities, our POWs' and our respective groups & parties. Finally, Congratulations to everyone who took the courageous decision to stand as Candidates, their Election Teams and the wider electorate for putting their faith in us. Onwards to the 32 County Socialist Irish Republic, free from foreign oppression.

The Background to GARC

0
0
In July 2013, the Parades Commission banned the Orange Order from marching through the Greater Ardoyne Community. The development was welcome to local residents, who had voiced strong objections for years to sectarian parades through their area. For decades these unwelcome marches brought violence, threats and intimidation to North Belfast. During that time, residents were forced to remain away from the Ardoyne rd, close shops with their movements about their severely restricted each and every time by hostile Paramilitary Police.

Greater Ardoyne Residents Perception of Loyal Order Marches

HOLY CROSS:
Prior to the Belfast Agreement in 1998, local people felt there was little they could do to end sectarian marches from disrupting their lives because the British State in the Six Counties facilitated the Loyal Orders for generations. The Good Friday Agreement (GFA) gave Nationalists a false dawn, promising that everyone in the North;'Has the right to live free from sectarian harassment'. Within three years, Loyalists blockaded Holy Cross Girls' Primary School in nearby Glenbryn with the full support of the UVF and UDA. Over a three month period and in front of the World's Media, Teachers, Parents and Pupils endured threats, intimidation and even a bomb attack. The entire sectarian scenario caused deep anger within the Ardoyne community. Particularly, when very few 'protestors' were arrested, appeared in Court or were even censored by the RUC & Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP). For 'fear' of offending the Unionist & Loyalist community in Belfast.

Holy Cross Blockade in 2001

THE TWELFTH (2001):

Given hopes for peace in places like Ardoyne, most lfamilies were genuinely devastated by the Blockade. The nightly gun and bomb attacks by Loyalists on vulnerable families only reinforced their dilemmas. Sectarian Policing was still being conducted by the Political Police and British Army. To many, it seemed the GFA wasn't worth the paper it was written on. Weeks after the blockade began, the RUC who did nothing to prevent or remove the sectarian thugs who had just brutalised young schoolgirls. Physically beat, intimidated and fired scores of lethal Plastic Bullets at Ardoyne residents protesting against Orangemen marching through Ardoyne.

The anger felt by locals, soon turned to rage and an intense riot broke out across the Ardoyne area, lasting a few days.

When the dust settled, many within Ardoyne believed that dialogue between residents and the Loyal Orders could prevent a repeat of violence in future! A hard task given the Orange Order's refusal to even recognise local populations, demographic changes and opposition in other Nationalist districts who faced the same type of sectarian difficulties associated with unwelcome parades.

ARDOYNE PARADES DIALOGUE GROUP (APDG):

In an attempt in securing talks aimed to prevent further violence, the Ardoyne Parades Dialogue Group (APDG) was established. It consisted of a number of concerned residents dedicated to ending decades of strife in the area in connection with unwanted Loyal Order marches.

APDG SIT-DOWN PROTEST 2005

Predictably, the Loyal Orders in Belfast refused to meet or even speak with the APDG, a residents group, representing Ardoyne area. Which led to the group having to highlight it's position through a series of high profile protests under the glare of the Media. Such as, blocking the Crumlin Road on July 12th, 2005. In which I was pleased to have been directly involved. Taking the lead on behalf of one's community is a noble task. As readers can see from the image below, I was arrested at the scene by the RUC, carried off the road and de-arrested a few yards down the road. The same process happened to others that day. None of us ever appeared in Court in connection with the event.

At first, the group was resident's led although over a period it became clear to many that Provisional S/F was attempting to influence the group in a specific direction. This happened around the same time as the Party was debating supporting the British Police or not throughout 2006. As many will know, I was still a member of PSF at that time but felt increasingly isolated because of my opposition in supporting an MI5 directed Police Force. I resigned from the Party soon after it endorsed the RUC/PSNI. The following year, the APDG collapsed amid serious recriminations of political interference.

CRUMLIN ARDOYNE RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION (CARA);

Towards the end of 2008, a number of Public Meetings were held in and around Ardoyne to ascertain the opinions of residents concerning Loyal Order parades through the area. A number of valid and valuable points were made throughout and most attending felt our points would be taken on board by the new Committee. A final meeting to agree a new Constitution was scheduled and around forty local people attended in Ardoyne Hall.

To our surprise, Fr. Gary Donegan meant to be the independent Chairperson to facilitate the election of a new Committee wasn't there. Not only that, but the SDLP was also not there. Instead, the meeting was chaired by Provisional S/F's Gerry Kelly. Who quickly informed everyone present that the new Constitution had already been agreed and ONLY those residents who lived on the Crumlin/Ardoyne Roads, Mountainview, Balhome Drive and the Dales could hold office positions or join CARA. A large section of those present including myself, strongly objected to the unconstitutional nature and insidious plan behind CARA. Kelly notified us that if we disagreed, we were free to leave the hall. A few insults were traded if I'm being honest but over twenty left the meeting disgusted. The general question was, how could Sinn Fein upsurp a genuine attempt by local residents to form a new group.

In the words of one excluded resident from Mountainview; 'I wouldn't entertain CARA, my Dad and I walked out of it's first meeting in disgust. I fail to see how people who don't even live here can fix this problem'.
The new 'Residents Group' was formed and had the full backing of PSF, the majority of local people were now excluded from crucial decisions about unwanted parades through our community. As can be seen from the photo above, CARA protests are regularly supplimented by Sinn Fein Activists. Throughout the remainder of 2008, those who were refused membership of CARA met regularly and began a resident's led survey of every household in the Greater Ardoyne area. Seeking opinions from families concerning Loyal Order parades. The process was time consuming and lasted around three months.

GREATER ARDOYNE RESIDENTS COLLECTIVE (GARC);
With the survey completed, it's findings were collated by an Independent Statistician and published. They were no surprise to those of us through our personal experiences of sectarian marches through our district. The overwhelming number of locals wanted an end to these parades, curfews and associated violence. The message was clear, Loyal Order parades were unwelcome in Greater Ardoyne and the local people wanted them stopped.

'Armed' with these facts as well as, our exclusion from CARA. There was a need for all, not just a small section of the community to be represented by a different group. One without political interference and resident's led. A number of subsequent discussions at the beginning of 2009. Amongst those who left the inaugural meeting of CARA were held. A name, Constitution and Committee was agreed. The Greater Ardoyne Residents Collective or GARC would represent ALL local residents on the sole issue of unwelcome parades.

Since then, GARC has been strong advocates for the rights of the Greater Ardoyne community to see an end sectarian parades through their local area. GARC proposed an alternative route that would ensure no sectarian marches enter the contested stretch of the Crumlin Road. The route was presented to the Community Leaders, Parades Commission and the Dublin Government for consideration. The Collective publicly stated that it would meet anyone or organisation who were serious about resolving the dispute. They also said that Protestants had the right to express their religion, culture and heritage. It did not wish to hinder those rights in anyway but that Loyal Order parades were not welcome in the Greater Ardoyne area.

GARC White-Line Picket

GARC has regularly protested against sectarian marches in a series of radical demos over the past few years. Including, White-Line Pickets, like the image above, Large Residents Marches and smaller protests. Despite intimidation, threats and arrests by the RUC/PSNI, the Collective continue to represent local residents. GARC has been not only excluded from talks between Ardoyne residents during a series of engagements. We have also been demonised by some Political Organisations who claim to represent the Ardoyne community for our stance. Likewise, GARC Activists have suffered criminalisation by the Political Police and

British Courts.

GARC Sit-Down Protest (2010)

Riot-Clad RUC/PSNI Forcibly Removing GARC Activists

GARC Protest March in 2011

Just over two weeks ago, GARC wrote to the local Orange Lodges, Royal Black and Apprentice Boys' Branches who insist on parading through our community. The Collective requested dialogue with the Loyal Orders to open lines of communication. To date, no response from the Orders has been made. Despite the fact that the same organisations are presently engaged in talks with CARA, Provisional S/F and the Catholic and Anglican Churches in a process that again excludes GARC.

Later today, GARC will meet with the new Parades Commission in Belfast to outline our objections to the possibility of another unwelcome Orange parade this coming Saturday.

The Greater Ardoyne community face the next few weeks with determination against unwelcome Loyal Order parades. Not only do we have Saturday's possible march, the 'Tour of the North' at the end of the month but also the Twelfth. Let's hope all three of these sectarian parades are prevented from entering our community!

Racism & Sectarianism is Black and White

0
0

Over the past few weeks, racism has raised it's ugly head in Belfast yet again. It isn't at all surprising given the history of sectarianism in such a divided city. Where generations of residents have endured hatred of one kind or another. To the extent that too many people were killed because of their religious or perceived religious identity.

Between 1966 and 1998, thousands of Belfast families were not only forced to leave their homes because of serious threats, brutal attacks and terrible killings. My own family was but one of many from the Ardoyne district who fled after a grenade attack on our house by Loyalist Militants in 1969. Later the same year, hundreds of local families, most with young children grabbed small amounts of belongings and crossed the Down and Louth Border to relative safety. The majority of who were housed in Free State Army Camps until attacks by the murderous RUC and their Unionist Allies calmed down. Sadly, some never returned North and moved to Scotland, England, Wales and of course down South.

I know there are many within the Unionist Community who fiercely reject suggestions that the RUC murdered anyone and claim it's republican propaganda. In response, may I point them to the names of Sammy McLarnon and Micheal Lynch. Both of who were shot and killed by RUC Members on August 14th, 1969 in Ardoyne. Or that Unionist Mobs burned dozens of Ardoyne families out of their homes in a number of local streets. Again I make a suggestion to look at the photos below of Brookfield Street and/or check the official records.

Brookfield Street, August 1969
Now to present day Belfast, for the past number of decades. Emigrants from across Europe and beyond have chose to visit, travel, live and work here. The overwhelming majority of Belfast citizens have been content to share their community with people from a range of different countries, colours, cultures and religions. The emigrants live in our streets, work the same jobs and their children learn in our Schools, Colleges and Universities. With the exception of a few bigots, almost everyone has embraced one another and their lives have been enriched with new horizons.
East Belfast, 2014
In response to the growing number of racist attacks across the city and gross insults against ethnic minorities by Senior Unionist Politicians and Fundamentalist Preachers. A number of mass rallies have been held outside the City Hall, once the bastion of sectarianism by ordinary Belfast residents. Where a huge demand for equality and an end to racism in all it's forms was demonstrated with confidence. Racism is the flip side of the Sectarian coin and Republicans, Socialists and Democrats must ensure all cultures are welcome and that bigotry is exposed & challenged whenever and wherever it occurs. !

Belfast March Against Racism, June 2014

Will the Orange Order Respond Positively to GARC's Offer of Dialogue?

Last week, a delegation from the Greater Ardoyne Residents Collective (GARC) met the Parades Commission in Holy Cross Monastery facilitated by the Rector, Fr. Gary Donegan. The meeting took place as the Commission was preparing to rule on an application from Orangemen based in Ligoniel and two Loyalist Flute Bands who wanted to march through the Greater Ardoyne area. GARC have in the past met a number of Commissioners but on this occasion it was an entirely new P.C. The other pressing issue was, there was widespread speculation that the application to march would be granted.

Given the fact that GARC had been prevented from partaking in talks between the Orange Order and another Residents Group, CARA. It was crucial that the Commission heard GARC's analysis of the situation facing the local community associated to unwelcome sectarian marches. According to the delegation, the discussion was positive, frank and enlightening. The Commission was given access to GARC's mandate, the thousands of completed surveys compiled in 2009 and a the recent letters inviting the Orange and Black Institutions to enter into talks. That to date have yet to be responded to. Commissioners listened to GARC's concerns based on representations from the community. That if permitted, another parade would inevitably cause serious conflict in the area. There was a little confusion about why GARC had been excluded and continues to be disallowed from the talks process. The Collective outlined the strength of objections to GARC and the political interference by Provisional Politicians.

In the end, the Parades Commission banned the three Orange Lodges and Flute Bands from parading through Greater Ardoyne on June 7th. Citing the lack of dialogue between the Order and local residents. As well as, over seventy breaches of parading laws during the nightly marches by the same Lodges and Bands at the Twaddell Interface. The Greater Ardoyne Community was rightly pleased at the realistic decision to reroute the march away from the Interface.
Typical Orange Attitude in Belfast
As I said earlier, GARC had invited Orange Order, Black Institution and the Apprentice Boys' of Derry to enter into dialogue with them. It was a sincere attempt to begin a process of talks to try and resolve the whole issue surrounding unwelcome parades through Greater Ardoyne and difficulties associated with these marches. GARC has yet to receive a response from any of the Orders. It does not give GARC or the wider community much hope as ignoring GARC's attempt at dialogue only reinforces local suspicion about the sectarian and isolationist nature the three Orders hold against Ardoyne. On Thursday June 12th, the same Commission refused to allow a similar march again to march through Greater Ardoyne next Friday evening. The 'Tour of the North' as it is known is held every two years by the Orange Order in Belfast. This year however, they want to parade again in what can only be described as provocative. Particularly after last week's march being banned.

An Offensive Woodvale Resident

So now we're well into the marching season, when sectarianism intensifies across the city. More so in North Belfast where Nationalist and Unionist communities live in close proximity with one another. Since 1968 onwards, the Woodvale and Ardoyne areas have endured many violent Twelfths associated with unwelcome parades. Is it not time for everyone concerned to get around a table and try and sort the whole issue out to the betterment of all communities? GARC made the the first move inviting the Loyal Orders to dialogue, will they receive a positive before this July?

Nelson McCausland and his Feeble Attempts to Demonise GARC and Misinform the Public

North Belfast DUP MLA, Nelson McCausland has for the past few weeks used his internet blog to undermine and demonise the Greater Ardoyne Residents Collective (GARC). It is no coincidence that these 'attacks' have taken place since GARC wrote to the 'Ligoniel' Branches of the Orange, Black Institutions and Apprentice Boys Of Derry. The three Lodges who insist on parading through the Greater Ardoyne community, against the wishes of residents. In a genuine attempt to break the logjam surrounding failed talks between the Orders and a section of residents, under the umbrella of the Crumlin Ardoyne Residents Association (CARA). Around a month ago, GARC wrote to the three Lodges offering dialogue. However to date, no acknowledgement or response has been forthcoming.
DUP Minister, Nelson McCausland
Instead of using his influence within the Orange Order and Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) as an Elected Representative in a positive manner to try and help solve the issue of unwelcome parades. McCausland has only muddied the waters, by using his blog to target and demonise GARC and it's Committee. On June 12th 2014, one post was directed against former Election Candidate and GARC Spokesperson, Dee Fennell. The said post was entitled; 'Dee Fennell - Greater Ardoyne Resident'? The entire thread was focused on whether Dee resided in Ardoyne or not and listed two street names as his residence. McCausland is well-aware that the listing addresses of Election Candidates, Republican Activists and Residents Spokespeople in the past led to them being targeted by Loyalist Paramilitaries!
Nelson Flanked by Orange Colleagues and UVF Commander, Winkie Irvine

Did Nelson McCausland consider that Dee Fennell and/or his family may have been hurt in an attack by Loyalists? Is his Internet post dangerous, given the recent Conflict that raged in and around Ardoyne, in my opinion it is! A number of Loyalist Armed Groups including, the UVF & UDA remain active. Is this the way a so-called Government Minister employed by the Stormont Assembly behave. Is there not a Code of Conduct for Ministers and MLAs'? For the record Nelson; every single member of the Greater Ardoyne Residents Collective (GARC) lives within the Greater Ardoyne Community! I wonder will the Media, Orange Order or the DUP challenge Nelson McCausland about him targeting a former Election Candidate and his family. I wonder will the Stormont Parties censor or report the DSD Minister to the Standard's Committee for such a dangerous statement? I highly doubt either of the above a chairde, as it seems Stormont is a law onto itself!

Earlier today, Tuesday June 17th, 2014 another post appeared on Nelson's blog, 'The Minister's Pen'. Concerning 'Dissident Republican Groups'. In which he made a number of erroneous points about the Republican Network for Unity (RNU)! Firstly, he claimed that RNU is a 'Dissident Republican Group'. He also stated that 'RNU is the Political Wing of Óglaigh na hÉireann'. In response, RNU is certainly not a 'Dissident Republican Group', we are a legitimate Political Party, registered at the beginning of this year. RNU is not the Political Wing of any Armed Group whatsoever. We do recognise the reality that as long as, Irish National Sovereignty is denied by the British Government. That Armed Resistance to the Imperialist Occupation in Ireland will continue. Finally, the fact that Nelson mentions myself in the post confirms my earlier point regarding his attempts to demonise and target GARC of which I am also a Committee Member! Which is nothing to do with RNU but the fact that I reside in Greater Ardoyne.

Instead of posting irrelevent posts on his blog about GARC and feeble attempts to demonise the GARC Committee. By attempting to link us to 'Dissident Republican Political Groups' and 'Armed Republican Groups'. Being connected to Political Parties or Political Groups is permitted according to Irish & British law. There is not the slightest shred of evidence that anyone within GARC has or is been involved in armed activity in any capacity. Despite his efforts to twist and misinform his readers. Nelson McCausland would be better trying to create space for proper dialogue between local residents and Loyal Order Lodges who insist on marching where they are clearly not welcome!

No Need for Bonfires

Over recent weeks, groups of teenagers from the Ardoyne & Bone areas have been gathering wood and dumping it at the old Jamaica Inn/Egg Factory site in the district. The site has been derelict for the past year or so and is in the process for a new housing development.

Prior to the Seventies, Bonfires in Nationalist districts of Belfast every August were a regular feature to celebrate the birthday of the Mother of Jesus and Catholic areas at the time each had their own bonfire. I believe these bonfires were in direct response to the Unionist ones' that were burned on the eve of the Twelfth commemorating the 'Battle of the Boyne' in 1690.

After Stormont introduced Internment Without Trial in August, 1971. Nationalist Bonfires were used to demonstrate opposition to that traumatic period in our history, when hundreds of men were trailed from their homes across Belfast by thousands of British Troops, beaten, interrogated and imprisoned. In Ardoyne, hundreds of families were forced to flee their homes after Loyalist Mobs attacked them and destroyed a number of streets. Two local residents were also murdered that particular day by British Soldiers, Sarah Worthington in Velsheda and Paddy McAdorey in Jamaica Street. Mrs. Worthington, a Protestant was shot and killed in her own home. While Paddy Mac, an IRA Volunteer was shot dead engaging British and Unionist Snipers firing into the area. Therefore, Internment plays a large role in the collective memory of the Ardoyne community.

Internment Day, Ardoyne, 1971

As the British Government's Internment policy continued throughout the early Seventies, many more local people found themselves behind bars. Regular protests and marches were held across the North, on one infamous rally, fourteen unarmed Civilians were gunned-down by the British in Derry City in what became known as, Bloody Sunday. Springhill and Ballymurphy in West Belfast were also targeted by the same murderers. When eleven residents were cut down in cold blood. These incidents and many more radicalised the majority of Nationalists. Not only against Internment but also the British Occupation of the Six Counties. Internment officially ended in December, 1975 and my Dad who had been interned twice on separate occasions in Long Kesh, was the final Internee to be released.

During the Eighties, the anniversary of Internment continued to be marked with bonfires. However, every year serious riots erupted with increased suffering for those communities including Ardoyne. Sadly, the British Crown Forces swamped Working-Class Belfast and proceeded to create havoc, arresting scores of young people and firing lethal Plastic Bullets indiscriminately. Many of those killed and injured were not even involved in riots and as the facts demonstrate, young children were deliberately targeted by the British Army and RUC.

In spite of Internment 'officially' ending in 1975, thousands of Political Prisoners remained inside at the behest of the British Penal System. The vast majority of POWs', were forced to wait without bail behind bars for up to two and three years before a trial in a Diplock Non-Jury Court, before charges were dropped. In other words, 'Internment By Remand'. As with Internment, the vast majority of Political Prisoners in the North came from Nationalist Communities and most seasoned Civil Rights Observers viewed this policy as 'Collective Punishment'!

Towards the end of the Eighties, Nationalist Community and Republicans began organising alternatives to Bonfires through annual Festivals or Fleadhanna in a number of Belfast districts. This was greeted passionately by residents, particularly young children and parents. Given the years of Bonfires and associated violence, the Fleadh became a relief to everyone. The Fleadhanna were also a positive manner in which one could commemorate Internment by holding Plays, Murals and Exhibitions etc.

Despite plans in the offering for a Fleadh in Ardoyne  was erected in Cranbrook Court in 1989 and became a magnet for young people. On August 8th, a riot ensued in the street with intense fighting and the mass shooting of Plastic Bullets at youths and residents. The Provisional IRA were also at the scene and responded in kind. Later the same night in the New Lodge area, another bonfire attracted hundreds of people including, Seamus Duffy (15) from the Bone. As ever, rioting broke out between British Troops stationed in nearby Girdwood Camp and the RUC in Mobile Patrols. Young Seamus was struck by a Plastic Bullet fired by the RUC as he ran away from the armoured vehicles and tragically died soon afterwards.

Seamus Duffy (15), Murdered by the RUC

The killing of Seamus Duffy, riots and Bonfires reinforced the belief amongst many with Nationalist Belfast that a real alternative was needed. There could not be a repeat of 1989. Since then, the vast majority of Nationalist Bonfires have disappeared and residents embraced Fleadhanna across the city. The sounds of rioting, shootings and bombings was replaced with music, laughter and happiness in the narrow streets of North and West Belfast. The British Crown Forces no longer had an excuse to swamp Nationalist & Republican communities in hostile fashion and trigger-happy!

Sadly this summer, groups of youths from in and around Ardoyne have been collecting wood for a Bonfire. Local Youth Workers, Sporting Figures and Political Parties and Groups represented in the Community have engaged with these young lads and asked them not to have a bonfire in Ardoyne! A number of Public Meetings have also been held in which scores of residents have expressed their disapproval at plans to erect a Bonfire.

The Republican Network for Unity (RNU) have been one of many Parties who have met the young people involved and told them of our objections and reasons behind them. We have also explained our involvement in the Anti-Internment League who last year organised and held a successful March in North & West Belfast to commemorate all the men & women Interned in the Seventies and to highlight ongoing abuses of Human Rights against Irish citizens by the British Occupiers. We have also informed them about plans for yet another Anti-Internment March for this August and the need for everyone including them to support events organised by the Committee that will be published soon. RNU like every other Republican Party and Group do not want a Bonfire and we will actively work to ensure that it doesn't happen.

(EXCLUSIVE) GARC Letter of Invitation to Loyal Orders for Dialogue

The following letter has been published with the approval of the Greater Ardoyne Residents Collective (GARC). It was sent by recorded delivery to the Ligoniel Orange Order Lodges, Royal Black Institution Branch and Apprentice Boys' of Derry Ligoniel Walker Club on May 21st, 2014.

The above Orders regularly march through the Greater Ardoyne Community without any consultation with local residents. The three letters were posted to the West Belfast Orange Hall requesting talks with the three Loyal Orders to discuss our analysis their position in relation to unwelcome parades.

Even before today's determination by the Parades Commission, GARC has not received any response. GARC hope that this publication will help everyone understand their current position on the issue.

Secretary,
Greater Ardoyne Residents Collective
(GARC)
MAY 21st, 2014

Secretary,
Earl Of Erne 1932 LOL,
C/O West Belfast Orange Hall,
Shankhill Road.
Belfast.

Dear Secretary,

Firstly, we would like to explain to your organisation about the origins of GARC and why our Collective was Constituted in 2009.

After the disbandment of the Ardoyne Parades Dialogue Group (APDG) in 2008, a number of local residents decided to conduct a survey of every household in the greater Ardoyne area concerning Loyal Order parades through the community. As well as, how best to end the negative impact these marches had on the wider community. The survey was pretty time consuming and took over three months to complete. We subsequently complied a report and delivered to every religious, community and political group represented in the locality. The report found that the vast majority, 98% of residents viewed these Loyal Order parades as Anti-Catholic, Anti-Nationalist & Anti-Republican and as such were not welcome in the greater Ardoyne community. The findings were given to a number of Community and Political groups for the purpose of providing a definitive answer to the opinions of local residents on this issue.

Around the same time, another group called CARA was also established. However unlike the APDG, all members of CARA had to reside within a specified couple of streets. Everyone else was deliberately excluded, unless you happened to be a member of Sinn Fein, They are also directed mainly by S/F members that do not even live in Greater Ardoyne. The fact that we had to outline how and why GARC was established proves that there is a clear lack of understanding within your organisation and community.

Over the past number of years, the Greater Ardoyne Residents Collective have held a number of peaceful protests and marches opposing Loyal Order parades. We have also issued regular statements to the media and to the internet. In each and every one, we have stated that we do not wish to hinder the Protestant religion, culture and heritage. We reiterate those sentiments again here today. We must however, state clearly that Loyal Order parades through Greater Ardoyne have negatively impacted on both our communities.

In an attempt to foster a better understanding of one anothers positions and explore the possibility of ending the ongoing problems associated with unwelcome parades, we invite your Order to enter into discussions with GARC that may benefit our respective communities.
Yours,
The Greater Ardoyne Residents Collective

GARC Withdraw Mass Mobilisation Plans for Unwelcome Twelfth March Statement (6/7/14)

The Greater Ardoyne Residents Collective (GARC) has asked me to publish their latest Statement to the Media on the Ardoyne Republican Blog. GARC reiterate it's opposition to sectarian parades through the Greater Ardoyne Community. However, the residents group has withdrew plans for a mass mobilisation on July 12th, 2014 after determinations by the Parades Commission and widespread community consultation...

GARC Protest 2012
"GARC is a non party political residents group that is committed to peaceful, radical activity that will lead to the end of all unwanted sectarian Loyal Order marches through Ardoyne, Mountainview and The Dales.

GARC have demonstrated our ability since 2010 to ensure that residents have the opportunity to participate in mass mobilisations of those oppos
ed to sectarian parades, including sit down protests, whiteline pickets and two counter parades attended by thousands of people. Our analysis that no sectarian parade is welcome in Greater Ardoyne was validated by a survey delivered to every home in the area, with over 90% of 1200 responding homes stating that all Loyal Order parades through our community are unacceptable. Our ability to again call thousands onto the streets to oppose either morning or evening parades should not be underestimated.

This past week has seen two contradictory determinations from the Parades Commission, one rewarding the Orange Order and UVF for putting this community under siege since July 2013, while another came to the logical conclusion that the evening parade was unjustified in seeking to trample over the rights of residents. It is the opinion of GARC, and by extension most Greater Ardoyne residents, that both parades should not pass through our area. We have demanded to meet the Parades Commission to put forward this argument this week, and this will happen in coming days.

The solution to the vicious circle of unwanted parades, loyalist intimidation, community disruption and PSNI violence against the people of Greater Ardoyne is to use the alternative route via Harmony Lane. This would provide the Loyal Orders with the totally legitimate right to express their culture and heritage where they are welcome, while causing no offence to residents and ensuring no need for massive funds being allocated to "security" and away from frontline services such as health and education. While our analysis would be that the route is already viable, any cost to the Stormont Executive of upgrading it to a standard acceptable to Loyal Orders would be minimal in comparison to the £10million it has cost to uphold the 2013 determination.

GARC remain willing to meet and talk with the Loyal Orders directly or indirectly, individually or collectively, to give our analysis and to listen to that of others. With this in mind, and following intensive community consultation since this year's determinations were made public, we have decided to withdraw plans for a mass mobilisation to oppose the 12th morning parade. This will help contribute to what we hope will be a conflict free 12th of July, that will lead to a conducive environment for talks in coming weeks around securing the use of the Harmony Lane route. However, we will have a number of residents present at the 12th morning parade to monitor for any breaches of the Parades Commission determination. Activity open to any resident, as GARC members proved in Court.

We would call upon other residents groups and political parties to support and promote the alternative route as the only viable and sensible solution to the issue of sectarian parades in Greater Ardoyne, rather than entertaining the "morning acceptable, evening unacceptable" argument. We would ask that they help to form a united campaign against the continued denial of Ardoyne, Mountainview and Dales residents to live free from sectarian harassment and intimidation".

Signed; GARC Steering Committee

Is this the alternative to unwelcome marches through Greater Ardoyne?

As most people are now aware, the Greater Ardoyne Residents Collective (GARC) withdrew it's planned protest against the Orange Order's Twelfth morning march through our community. There were a number of issues that influenced GARC's decision in not holding such a protest. One of the main reasons was to help ease tensions within the Protestant, Unionist and Loyalist community about the Parades Commission to ban the evening parade on the same day. The Collective sough to demonstrate our goodwill toward the Orange Order and express again that GARC do not seek to end their culture and heritage in anyway. Whilst GARC oppose Loyal Order parades through Greater Ardoyne, it does so in the knowledge that there is an alternative route open to the Orders, where NO offence would be caused to local residents.

Last week, GARC held a well-attended Press Conference where a detailed and independent report into it's 2009 Survey of Greater Ardoyne residents views on Loyal Order parades in the area was outlined. The Collective provided maps and copies of a recent recording by Activists to the assembled Journalists and Residents of it's proposed alternative route. A route that could well enable Loyal Orders use for parades, without opposition from Residents Groups whatsoever. The proposal was not really carried by BBC Newsline or UTV News, though a number of Newspapers published it's details. GARC believed it was crucial for it's private position to publicly outlined, given misrepresentation and misinformation by some Nationalist and Unionist Political Parties and Groups. Until  now, it's public position had been No Parades - No Violence. Sadly, that message had been misinterpreted by Unionists and the Media. Obviously, GARC also had a radical private position but did not wish to make it known to wider society. Thus, it was kept private until dialogue between the Collective and Orders took place. Therefore, below are two internet links to two separate videos, GARC's latest press conference and the other of the Harmony Lane/Bridge route. A lane that GARC believe could provide an alternative to years of dispute regarding Loyal Order Parades in Greater Ardoyne. A route that could resolve serious tensions for all communities in this part of North Belfast. The Alternative Route is nothing new to the debate surrounding parades. It was first raised by the defunct, Ardoyne Parades Dialogue Group (APDG). However, GARC feel it is the best way to resolve the ongoing issue. Alongside

Personally, I believe if the Loyal Orders and GARC met it could not only lead to a better understanding of the two positions. It would also end in agreement by everyone concerned, leaving the future for all much brighter. What confuses me is the current unwillingness of the three local Orders to meet GARC and explore a way forward. Dialogue cannot hurt anyone, nor can it hinder anyone. Harmony Lane could present everyone with a much needed alternative to years of dispute, disagreement and of course the unwanted and associated violence. The publication of the Alternative Route video and of course, the Survey Report would not have been needed had the Loyal Orders positively responded to GARC's offer of dialogue in May of this year. Sadly, GARC have yet to receive any direct contact from the three Orders and this is quite regrettable given our genuine attempt to engage.

In the absence of meaningful dialogue, GARC will pursue it's objectives as it has always done in a peaceful, radical and determined manner. Last week, GARC engaged a Solicitor and Barrister and began legal proceedings to take a Judicial Review of the Parades Commission's decision to permit the morning march by the Orange Order through our community. The case did not take place due to the lack of time available and legal costs. Although unsuccessful on this occasion, GARC will continue it's Campaign to end all unwelcome parades. If necessary, the Collective will utilise the judicial avenue again to ensure that the rights of the Greater Ardoyne Community is respected! Since our formation in 2009, GARC have proven time and again that we can mobilise huge numbers to change the dynamic in favour of residents rights to live free from sectarian harassment. Likewise, we can also demonstrate our willingness to suspend mobilisations whenever we choose.

Finally, here are a few pertinent questions which readers of this blog should ponder. How much longer will the Orange Order persist in it's refusal to meet GARC? Would it not be better to begin dialogue now in the aftermath of the Twelfth? When will the Loyal Orders enter into dialogue with GARC? Others within the Protestant, Unionist and Loyalist Community are willing to speak with the Collective and to listen to us, why not the Loyal Orders?

IMPERIALIST AGGRESSION AGAINST GAZA

0
0
As people throughout Ireland enjoyed the recent good weather. Many of us dedicated the summer days to our families, visiting local beaches and coastal villages. The Irish don't often get a heat wave and we've made the most of it. Before the clouds and rain return. It is well-known that us Irish regularly complain about the wind, rain, clouds given the climate which surrounds our island. Hot weather is not immune from complainers.

On a more serious note, the biggest complaint heard this summer across Ireland has definitely been the targeting, murder and genocide in Gaza by Israel! Gaza is a small territory on the Mediterranean Coast populated by over 1.5 million Palestinians. Ever since the partition of Palestine in 1948 and the creation of Israel and Lebanon by the British government. The indigenous populace has suffered generations of Racism, Sectarianism, Ethnic Cleaning, Famine and Endless Plantations of millions of European Hebrews. Areas inhabited by Palestinians have became smaller and smaller, as Israeli Settlers take more territory.

The vast majority of Irish citizens sympathise with the plight of Palestinians because of our colonial past, when our ancestors suffered a similar fate. Ireland experienced the same type of British imperialist brutality. The Ulster Plantation, Armed Settlements, Great Hunger, Widespread Imprisonment, Sectarianism, Ethnically Cleansing and Partition are but a few examples. When Ireland resisted British tyranny, Imperialists dealt with us in much the same way as Israel now mistreats Palestinians. As Readers can see from the image above, over five million Palestinians are classed as Refugees by the United Nations (UN). Ireland also has a massive diaspora across the world, descendants of Irish citizens forced to leave their own country because of centuries of social, religious, cultural and economic inequality.

Over the past few weeks, the Israeli Armed Forces have again attacked Gaza and its people. Where over 1,000 Palestinians, men, women and young children have been massacred in the name of Imperialism! Entire neighbourhoods, Mosques, Schools, Hospitals and even Cemeteries have been destroyed! The whole infrastructure in Gaza is now in tatters as the 'International Community' stands idly-by. The U.N. is a Paper Tiger, afraid to confront Israel over its War Crimes.

Like Palestinians in the West Bank, Gaza also went to the Polls in 2006 believing the election would give them democracy. The opportunity to choose a Government to represent the people. The United Nations claimed the vote would enable Israel and Palestine to avail of the 'Two-State Solution'. The subsequent result surprised Israel and its American funders. Hamas, an Islamic Political Party was elected to govern the Strip for the foreseeable future.

Since then, Palestinians in Gaza were made to pay the price for not electing the PLO (Fatah) instead. Israel immediately imposed a military and economic blockade around Gaza and demanded its people radically change the outcome and choose a new friendlier Executive. The people in Gaza and Hamas refused to accept the siege and began a campaign of resistance to Zionist aggression.

Israel responded in three separate attacks against Gaza in 2006, 2009 and 2012, with vicious assaults from land, sea and air forces. That left over 1,500 Palestinians dead in another attempt to destroy Gaza. Israel has scores of nuclear weapons, heavy tanks, modern warplanes, naval vessels, apache helicopters and thousands of Zionist troops to wage war on the Palestinians. Whilst Gaza is only able to defend itself against military aggression with small weaponry. So let's not believe the Media, there is no War in the Middle-East, it is a Campaign of Genocide.

Irish people can express demands for an end to the Siege of Gaza, Zionist Oppression and a Gaza free from Imperialist Attacks. We do this by taking to our Facebook and Twitter Accounts, Lobby our Elected Politicians, donate much needed finance to charities dedicated to helping Palestinians and of course take to the streets and protest. All of which has been done across the country in the last month. Please don't give up, as the Zionist Regime in Israel will never end its murder campaign against Palestinians!

IRELAND SUPPORTS PALESTINIAN RIGHT TO SELF-DETERMINATION

0

Since the first week of July, television and Computer screens throughout the world and Ireland have been inundated with savage images and ferocious footage from Gaza that have witnessed yet another vicious Zionist campaign of genocide against Palestinian families living there.

A description of Gaza is of nearly two million people corralledinto an area half the size of County Louth, which is the smallest County in Ireland. Gaza is surrounded by a heavily-militarised land border brutally enforced by a hostile Israeli Army with contemporary weaponry, tanks and armoured vehicles. Its territorial waters and airspace is patrolled by a huge Navy and Airforce, with access to modern gunships, submarines, jets and drones.
Nearly everyone in Gaza live below the poverty line and are forced to rely on donations from International Charities of medical, food and clothing aid. The vast majority of Gazans are unemployed without the prospects of a proper job. Doctors and Hospitals never have enough medicines to ease peoples suffering. Israel continues to exercise control supplies of water, electricity and telecommunications into Gaza.

If one takes the above into account and actually investigates the campaign of genocide during the past weeks in Gaza. Close to two thousand residents have been butchered with over 5,000 badly injured, half of the victims are children. Their homes, schools, hospitals, mosques, universities and entire infrastructure have been destroyed in relentless attacks. Palestinians already face a huge humanitarian crisis of epic proportions.

The third UN School Attacked with Israeli Missiles

Despite the situation in Gaza, the United Nations has done little to end the slaughter apart from issuing a number of press statements that Israel just ignores. The organisation clearly has more interest in protecting Zionist War Criminals than their Palestinian victims, in what can only be described as cowardice.

The response from the Fine Gael and Labour Coalition has been equally despicable as it too hasn’t done anything about Israel’s vicious attacks on Gaza. So as, not to offend Zionists Dublin predictably ordered its Ambassador to abstain on the UN vote concerning the onslaught. The abstention proves just how out of touch, Enda Kenny is from the majority of Irish citizens.

Enda Kenny: An Irish Disgrace
In most Irish towns and cities, working-class communities have taken to the streets in spontaneous unity to demonstrate their opposition against the Israeli offensive in Gaza and the mass murder of Palestinian men, women and children. Brutal images on our television and computer screens have rightly caused revulsion and outrage across the country. Ordinary people have organised a mass boycott of Israeli products, countless street protests and effective marches demanding an end to the genocide.

There is a growing need to have the Zionist military blockade by the Israeli Navy, Air Force and Army against Gaza lifted. Irish people can help this take place, if we remain focused and unified against these crimes. My best wishes go to everybody involved in the Gaza solidarity campaigns, keep the pressure up!

PRINCIPLED REPUBLICAN EX-POWs' MURAL and ANTI-INTERNMENT MARCH - 2014

Principled Republican Ex-POWs' Group 10/8/14
As thousands of Republicans & Nationalists gathered in Ardoyne for a March ( 10/8/14) to commemorate the anniversary of Internment. With the assistance of the Anti-Internment League, a new group of former Political Prisoners from the area, unveiled a new Wall Mural dedicated to past and present POWs' in Ardoyne Avenue. The name of the group is, 'Principled Republican Ex-POWs' and is an independent collective of former Prisoners, aligned to no Political Party or Group. The Group was established earlier this year by North Belfast Republican Ex-Prisoners

The thirty-strong Ex-POW Group marched a short distance to line-up before the new Mural, where Martin Óg Meehan introduced An Cathaoirleach, Ta Cosgrove to those assembled. Ta then called on Veteran Ardoyne Republican, Luger Maguire to unveil the large image. It was fitting that Luger, a former Internee was chosen on the anniversary of Internment. Ta subsequently read a prepared statement which was warmly welcomed by those assembled. The text of the statement was as follows;

Principled Republican Ex-POWs' Group 10/8/14

"On behalf of Principled Ex-Republican Prisoners of War, we are gathered here to unveil a new mural. I’m conscious that our comrade, Sean Colligan organised the last mural painted on this wall over a decade ago. He hand-carved the two large stones in the garden over a decade ago. Sean was a dedicated Community Worker, whose tenth anniversary occurs this week and we remember him with pride.
The Ardoyne man standing next to me was Interned for 3 years in the Cages of Long Kesh. On his release, he returned to Active Service with the IRA and was captured imprisoned in Crumlin Road Gaol by Ireland’s enemies and also spent the next 9 ½ years in the H-Blocks. Would Luger Maguire please unveil the new mural on behalf of our group. This mural is dedicated to all republican prisoners and their families, past and present regardless of their political allegiances. We make no distinction between ex-POWs’ and current POWs’. To our prisoners group, we treat all with the due respect they deserve.

Many thousands of Irishmen and women from working-class communities like this across Ireland made personal sacrifices, some played more active roles than others but all shared the emotional pain of separation from their families in order to achieve Irish freedom. Our families undeniably endured years of hardship, as a result of their steadfast determination to stand by us.

We believe that over the past number of years Republican principles have been diluted to the point of nonrecognition. Our Prisoners group remain wedded to principles that we endorsed when we set out the rid the illegitimate British presence on this island. As principled Republicans, we cannot buy into the stabilising of partition, policies of appeasement and acceptance of political policing and all its corrupt powers including, Diplock Courts, Internment by Remand and degrading treatment of POWs’.

The mural depicts the battle of wills between Irish Republican Prisoners, their Oppressors and Institutions. The verse that stands out and gives us strength are the words of Volunteer. Bobby Sands; ‘It lights the dark of this prison cell,It thunders forth its might,It is ‘the undauntable thought’, my friend,That thought that says ‘I’m right!"

New POW Mural
Immediately after the unveiling, the Principled Republican Ex-POWs' Group took their place in the Anti-Internment March with our friends and comrades to remember all those who were interned, their families, expose the continued British occupation and demand basic rights of current POWs' in Maghaberry, Portlaoise and Hydebank.

FAITHFUL TO THE LAST: HENRY-JOY MCCRACKEN

This Sunday, 31/8/14, the Republican Network for Unity will hold it's annual Henry-Joy McCracken Commemoration and March in Belfast. For the past few years, RNU have held this important event to honour one of the Founding Father's of Irish Republicanism, executed by British Imperialists and buried in Belfast.
Henry-Joy McCracken (31/8/1767 - 17/7/1798)

Henry-Joy was interested in radical politics from an early age and became inspired in the growth of republicanism after the success of the American and French Revolutions with it's ideology of 'liberty, equality and fraternity'. He was a founding member of the United Irish Society in 1791, committed to 'breaking the connection with England'.

In 1795, McCracken led a number of comrades including, Wolfe Tone, Samuel Neilson, and Thomas Russell to the top of Cavehill overlooking the town of Belfast where they swore an oath; 'never to desist in our efforts until we have subverted the authority of England over our country and asserted her independence'

Henry-Joy regularly travelled throughout Ireland using his business as a cover to organising other branches of the United Irishmen. He was arrested in 1796 and detained in Kilmainham Gaol in Dublin, with a number of other Leading Republicans. He fell ill in 1797 and was freed that December.

In June 1798, McCracken was elected General of the Republican Army in Antrim.  He led Rebel Forces in the County, commandeering a number of towns. His plans met initial success but his army was defeated during an attack on Antrim Town. The majority of republicans including Henry-Joy evaded capture, as they attempted to regroup a British Informer passed on the address of his billet to Dublin Castle and he was subsequently arrested.

The British attempted to bribe McCracken with an offer of clemency in return for information on his comrades. The 'offer' was rejected by Henry-Joy and he remained; 'Faithful to the Last'.  Within days of his refusal, the prominent republican was court-martialled and hanged at Corn Market on July 17th 1798, aged just 30.

RNU invite everyone to come along this Sunday and honour Henry-Joy's contribution to Ireland's freedom struggle in our march and commemoration.

Yesterday afternoon, (Sunday 31st August) the Republican Network for Unity held a successful and dignified march commemoration in Belfast for Irish Revolutionary; Henry-Joy McCracken (1797-1798). In bright sunshine, hundreds of marchers made their way through North Belfast to honour Henry-Joy on his birthday.

Henry-Joy McCracken (1767-1798)
The march was respectful with lots of encouraging support from the residents of Ardoyne, Oldpark, Cliftonville, New Lodge and Carrickhill. As the march entered Clifton Street, the four Republican Flute Bands accompanying RNU, voluntarily stopped playing tunes as we approached the main Orange Hall and the Indian Community Centre next door.

Vile Sectarian Protest (outside Clifton Street Orange Hall)
Despite the message of hope, freedom, equality between every Irish citizen which epitomised Henry-Joy and the United Irishmen. Loyalists including, a number of elected City Councillors held a protest facing Henry Place. There was a large RUC/PSNI presence within yards of the cemetery, gathering intelligence/footage and photos, that accompanies every Republican Commemoration. As the march made it's way towards the graveyard, Republicans were verbally abused, had items including, a firework thrown at them by Loyalists. Some of the comments shouted, were quite hurtful and hateful. As a matter of fact, they issued death threats against marchers as well as, yelling about child abuse in my family! That were quite indescribable to say the least. The sectarian abuse continued as we entered Henry-Place, except for a few people marching retaliated in a similar vein which was totally wrong.

In the cemetery, an introduction was given by former H-Block POW and Republican Network for Unity Political Organiser, Ta Cosgrove. Who called on RNU Activist, Sinéad Adams to address the hundreds gathered. Sinéad spoke of the life and progressive contribution to Belfast by Henry-Joy's sister, Mary-Ann who is buried next to her Patriotic brother. The main Speaker was RNU North Belfast Chairperson,Martin Óg Meehan. The text of my speech follows below;

"Firstly, I would like to welcome everyone here today on behalf of the Republican Network for Unity. For the past few years, RNU has commemorated Henry-Joy McCracken, one of the founding fathers of Irish Republicanism with dignity and respect. Henry-Joy was an Eighteenth Century Radical who envisioned an Ireland free from British occupation, free from religious discrimination, free from imperialism, free from social, cultural and economic inequality.

Before going any further, I need to put Henry-Joy into his historical context. The American and French Revolutions, greatly influenced Irishmen like Henry-Joy McCracken. The two successful struggles ended centuries of tyrannical dictatorships by Kings and brought democracy to both countries. On October 14th 1791, a small group of Irish Republicans, Theobold Wolfe Tone, Thomas Russell, Henry-Joy McCracken, Samuel Neilson, Thomas Emmet, William Sinclair, Henry Haslett, Thomas McCabe, William Simms, Robert Simms and Thomas Pearce met in Belfast and established the Society of the United Irishmen.

Prior to the formation of the United Irishmen, the British government used religion as a divisive tool to cause conflict. However, the new organisation consisted of Protestant Anglicans, Presbyterian Dissenters and ordinary Catholics alike, as equal members. After Britain declared War with France in 1793, the United Irishmen was treated as subversive and outlawed by the British Government.

In June 1795, McCracken, Tone, Russell, Neilson and Emmet secretly met on Cave Hill, where they agreed an oath. They swore to NEVER DESIST IN OUR EFFORT UNTIL WE SUBVERT ENGLISH AUTHORITY OVER IRELAND AND ASSERT HER INDEPENDENCE. Tone travelled to France and secured military aid to help an Irish Uprising. Napolean gave his full support appointed Tone a General in the Revolutionary Army and also gave him charge of a large expeditionary force. The flotilla filled with thousands of troops and a massive arsenal for Irish rebels failed to reach Ireland due to bad weather. Tone had been in regular contact with his comrades back home and they still anticipated French help.

The United Irish planned the Uprising for 1798. However, due to infiltration Informers notified their British Masters who the Leaders were and when the Rising would take place. Key Revolutionaries were subsequently lifted and imprisoned, leaving most plans in disarray. Another major problem for the United Irishmen was the formation of the sectarian Orange Order who led widespread persecution of Republicans, radicals and in particular, Catholics throughout the North. They were supported in their brutal atrocities by the local Yeomanry and thousands of British Troops.

Despite British and Unionist oppression across the country, the United Irish rose in Counties Waterford, Tipperary, Wexford, Kildare, Kilkenny, Carlow, Dublin, Meath, Antrim, Down and Armagh. Significant battles occurred in Wexford, Down and Antrim but ended in defeat for the Irish. The Republican Army in Antrim was led by Henry-Joy and after some success, they too were beaten. McCracken evaded capture in Antrim town but was arrested later after he was identified by an Informer.

Henry-Joy was offered clemency from the British, if he testifiedagainst other leaders. McCracken refused to turn on his comrades and remained faithful to his principles. He was court-martialled at the age of 30 and hanged on 17 July 1798at Corn Market in Belfaston land his grandfather had donated to the city.  His remains were reinterred here at Clifton Street Cemeteryalongside his sister Mary-Ann. Prior to her own death, his sister also raised Henry-Joy’s daughter, Mary Bodell.

As I said earlier, our Network has honoured Henry-Joy McCracken here in this lonely graveyard for the past few years. Before that, no Republican group felt the need to commemorate a local legend. A person who dedicated himself to ending imperialist oppression in our nation, a patriot that did his best to free Ireland from the centre to the sea!

RNU is a revolutionary Irish Republican Party, committed to building a socialist alternative to the failed politics of the Dublin and Stormont counter-revolutionary Assemblies, which uphold partition and maintain domestic and foreign capitalism in this country.

Our Network provides a political, economic and social vision for Ireland. We desire every Irish person, family and community to have what McCracken and his comrades struggled for EQUALITY, LIBERTY AND FRATERNITY. We actively work towards what the United Irish Society fought for to break the connection with imperialism.

RNU follows the same path as Nora Connolly O’Brien did in her attempts to secure national, social and economic freedom. Our Party advocate the words of Maire Drumm, when she famously said - We will take no steps backwards!

We oppose all the so-called Agreements between disillusioned Irish Representatives and corrupt British Imperialists, including the Belfast Agreement of 1998. As the influential Socialist-Republican, Seamus Costello once stated – the British design Treaties that only perpetuate divisions of Ireland’s national territory and the working-class.

RNU do not accept the legitimacy of the Garda Síochána or RUC/PSNI, both organisations are inherently political. Their main objective is not to protect every citizen’s rights but the crushing of revolutionary sentiment, north and south.

We advocate a 32 County Democratic Socialist Republic based on the Irish working-class reclaiming full control of our national territory, resources and decision making processes. Although still a relatively young Party, RNU is determined as Republican Icon, Bobby Sands was to witness the young or old join with him and play their part in the Irish Freedom Struggle.

We must also remember that are Political Prisoners still inside Maghaberry, Portlaoise and Hydebank that number over 100.

Finally, we recall what Liam Mellows said just prior to his execution by the Free State in 1922, The Republic stands for truth & honour and for all that’s noble. By truth, honour, sacrifice and principle Ireland will be set free!"
